It’s not really a secret. But it works.
There’s one simple, but very powerful tip to aid weight loss which often gets overlooked.
Don’t have junk food in the house!
Easy, isn’t it? Hear me out. When we tell ourselves we can’t have something, we want it even more. When I know there’s a box of Cornettos in the freezer, that’s all I can think about. Not only do I think about them, I lack the willpower to forget about them, so I have one. Then probably two. And before you know it I’ve had the full box in two evenings. Sound familiar or just me? I know I lack willpower when it comes to food, so I just help myself by not having food that I know I’ll overeat in the house.
And it works. I’ve managed to maintain my weight and even lose a few pounds by doing this. If I get a craving for something but there is no junk food in the house, I can’t be bothered to make the effort to walk to the corner shop just to pick up a Snickers. Usually within a minute I have got distracted by something else and the craving disappears.
What also helps is having a couple of small treats in the house. For example, when I do my food shop, I do it according to the healthy foods on my list. Writing down a shopping list and meal planning can really help to avoid buying junk. Once I’ve filled up my trolley full of healthy food, I go and grab myself a Curly Wurly or a Freddo to have as a reward for doing the shop. It sounds daft I know, but this positive reinforcement motivates me not to go silly and buy a multi pack of Haribo.
Additionally, I try to have lots of fresh berries in the house. Strawberries, blueberries and raspberries are gorgeous, and a handful of these can really satisfy a sweet craving. Fruit teas can also work a treat. They are healthy and really have a sweet kick to them. My favourites are raspberry and Echinacea, ginger and liquorice.
It’s all about balance. Don’t get me wrong, all of the above sometimes goes out of the window, especially if I’m having a bad day, and I’ll get a whole armful of goodies. But if you can apply this rule most of the time, especially if you don’t already do it, I can guarantee you will start to see results within weeks.
